The 25th African Human Rights Moot Court Competition is organised by the Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria in collaboration with the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights and The University of The Gambia from 3 to 8 October 2016 in Pretoria, South Africa

2016 marks a quarter of a century since the first African Human Rights Moot Court Competition was first held in Harare, Zimbabwe. This year also marks the 30th anniversary of the Centre for Human Rights. In celebration of these two milestones, the Centre for Human Rights, the University of The Gambia and the African Commission will co-organise the 25th African Human Rights Moot Court Competition.

The African Human Rights Moot Court Competition is the largest gathering of students, academics and judges around the theme of human rights in Africa. This annual event brings together all law faculties in Africa, whose top students argue a hypothetical human rights case as if they were before the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights. The Competition aims to prepare a new generation of lawyers to argue cases of alleged human rights violations before the African Court.

Since its creation in 1992, 142 universities from 49 African countries have taken part in tis permanent fixture on the Africa legal education calendar. The Moot has been a catalyst for the establishment of the leading programmes in the field of human rights teaching and research in Africa. In 2015, the 24th edition of the Moot Court Competition was co-organised by and hosted at the School of Law, University of Zambia, bringing together 183 participants in 61 teams from 20 African countries.

In 2016, the Moot Competition will tackle issues on the legality of withdrawal from the African Court’s jurisdiction by African states, conditions of detention, freedom of association, gender and human rights of women.

Due to the alarming human rights situation in The Gambia, not having received guarantees regarding free expression and safe stay of Moot participants, the Moot Competition has been relocated to Pretoria, South Africa, with new dates:
3 - 8 October 2016.
