The Institute for International and Comparative Law in Africa in the Faculty of Law, University of Pretoria is hosting a short course that offers an opportunity to learn about key developments in the area of public international law.

The short course will be directed by:

- John Dugard (Leiden University; former member, International Law Commission);
- Michelo Hansungule (University of Pretoria);
- David Kinley (University of Sydney);
- André Smit (former Legal Adviser, Department of Defence);
- Frans Viljoen (University of Pretoria) and
- Gus Waschefort (University of Pretoria).

About the course
During the one-week International Law course, participants are given an overview of some of the most important aspects of international law.
The following aspects are covered:
- Treaties
- States
- Territory
- Jurisdiction and Immunity
- State Responsibility and Diplomatic Protection
- Human Rights
- Sea and Air Law
- International Adjudication
- United Nations Law
- The African Union
- The Use of Force
- International Criminal Law and International
- Humanitarian Law

Particpants
The course is aimed at legal practitioners, governmental and intergovernmental officials, members of civil society and academics.

Course Requirements
A law degree is a requirement for admission. Participants will be required to prepare reading material from the textbook by John Dugard, International Law. A South African Perspective (Juta, 4th rev. ed, 2011). In addition, primary materials will be made available on the internet in advance. Participants who have attended all lectures will receive a certificate of attendance on completion of the course.
Applicants must submit a copy of their law degree with their application preferably by 15 January 2012.

Course fee
The course fee is R 4500.00 and includes all course material and lunch. University of Pretoria graduate students can apply for a reduced course fee of R 2000.00. Participants are responsible for their own accommodation and travel arrangements.
