The Gender Unit of the Centre for Human Rights was established in 1993, with the objective of improving the quality of the life and the status of women in South Africa. After ten years of focusing mainly on the legal situation of women in South Africa, the Unit shifted its focus to the human rights situation of women in Africa. The Unit approaches gender issues holistically and includes sexual minority rights in its work. It also recognises the important role of men in the struggle for gender equality and aims to involve men accordingly. Through research, training and advocacy, the Gender Unit aims to: - promote implementation of the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa (Women's Protocol) and other international instruments related to the rights of women
- support the Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Women in Africa
- popularise the Women's Protocol
- strengthen regional mechanisms with a commitment to the advancement of women's rights
- promote gender sensitive policies and practices
- strategise for equal opportunities for all women
