This is a present but vacant full-time permanent position. The successful candidate should be able to start on 1 January 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter.

BACKGROUND:

The Centre for Human Rights is on the one hand aacademic department in the Faculty of Law, conducting research, running five pan-African master’s programmes and supervising a large cohort of doctoral candidates, and, on the other hand, it engages in donor-funded research, capacity-building, advocacy and training projects to advance human rights in Africa. The Centre has observer status with the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child and consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council. While mainly relating to the academic programmes presented by the Centre, the responsibilities of the Associate Professor/Professor will extend to the Centre’s non-academic operations.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The responsibilities of the incumbent will include:

  • Teaching and curriculum development in the subject specialisations of international human rights law, with a focus on the African context, at the postgraduate level;
  • Conducting academic and scholarly research in pursuit of the Faculty’s research objectives;
  • Supervising students at the postgraduate level;
  • Assisting with academic administration and management when required;
  • Providing mentorship to post-doctoral fellows;
  • Providing intellectual leadership to the Centre’s programmes and projects;
  • Developing and overseeing the implementation of donor-funded projects in human rights law;
  • Performing other duties as may be required by the Director/Head of Department.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Associate Professor

  • A doctorate with specialisation in human rights law, preferably with a focus on international human rights law in an African context;
  • At least 8 years’ tertiary teaching experience, which includes curriculum development and transformation as strong recommendations;
  • A significant record of q uality peer-reviewed publications, exemplified by  at least 16 peer-reviewed or DHET accredited publication units, of which 6 should have been published in the past 4 years;
  • Evidence of successful master’s supervision: 4 research master’s, or 6 coursework master’s mini-dissertations will be strong recommendations, and, where possible, evidence of completed successful doctoral supervision or co-supervision;
  • Conference papers delivered at national or international conferences;
  • Suitable NRF research rating, or a substantive peer-review report or other proof of academic standing indicating local recognition and some international recognition in the field of expertise;
  • Relevant academic administration experience;
  • Evidence of international presence in the field of  human rights law, preferably with a focus on international human rights law in an African context;
  • Evidence of community engagement related to human rights training, advocacy or capacity building;
  • A ctive memberships of academically relevant local and international subject-related bodies, where applicable.

Professor

  • A doctorate with specialisation in human rights law, preferably with a focus on international human rights law in an African context;

  • At least 10 years’ tertiary teaching experience, which includes curriculum development and transformation as strong recommendations;

  • An outstanding record of quality peer-reviewed publications, exemplified by a t least 30 peer-reviewed or DHET accredited publication units, of which 8 should have been published in the past 5 years;

  • Evidence of successful master’s supervision (at least 6 research or 10 coursework master’s mini-dissertations successfully completed), or at least two completed successful doctoral supervisions;

  • Active memberships of academic relevant local and international subject-related bodies, where applicable;

  • Conference papers delivered at national and international conferences;

  • Suitable NRF research rating or a substantive peer-review report or other proof of academic standing indicating international recognition in the field of expertise;

  • Relevant academic administration experience;

  • Evidence of international presence in the field of human rights law, preferably with a focus on international human rights law in an African context;

  • Evidence of community engagement related to human rights training, advocacy or capacity building; and

  • A published monograph will be a strong recommendation.

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

  • Ability to work independently;

  • Ability to work as part of a diverse and dynamic team;

  • Appropriate communication skills;

An in-depth understanding of human rights law, with a focus on international human rights law in an African context, to enable development of new knowledge, innovation and understanding within the field.

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

  • Specialisation in any of the following: the rights of persons with disabilities and other vulnerable groups; socio-economic rights; freedom of expression, access to information and digital rights; elections, governance and the rule of law; 
  • Ability or experience in adopting multi-, inter- and transdisciplinary approaches;
  • Established networks and teaching experience across Africa;
  • Experience in engaging with African Union human rights bodies;
  • Experience in project management.

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
