DEPARTMENT: CENTRE FOR HUMAN RIGHTS
POST TITLE: ASSISTANT DIRECTOR (ONE POST)
PEROMNES POST LEVEL: 6

(The successful candidate will be appointed on a temporary full-time basis, initially for a one-year contract. The contract may be renewed depending on available funding, and the incumbent’s satisfactory performance. This is an existing but vacant position in the Centre. With this appointment, the Centre management will consist of a Director and two Assistant Directors.)

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The successful applicant will be responsible for:

  • Supporting the Director in the management of the Centre for Human Rights, which is a department in the Faculty of Law;
  • Overseeing project planning, management and reporting under various contracts;
  • Fund-raising for the Centre’s externally funded projects and programmes;
  • Representing the Centre in international fora;
  • Providing intellectual leadership to and engagement in Centre projects;
  • Building partnerships to fulfill the Centre’s mission; 
  • Teaching on the Centre’s programmes.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • A Master’s degree qualification in human rights law or a related field;
  • Proven competence and experience in project planning and proposal writing;
  • Proven competence and experience in management of sizable projects, including their monitoring and evaluation;
  • Proven experience and competence in successfully raising funds and management of these funds;
  • Experience in liaison with a variety of stakeholders, particularly within Africa;
  • Experience in partnership building.

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

  • Established national and African profile and networks;
  • Excellent oral and writing skills in English;
  • Proven leadership skills.

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

  • A doctoral degree qualification in a human rights law or a related field;
  • Experience of working with African Union human rights bodies;
  • A qualification in management, generally, or project management, specifically;
  • Experience in editing or production of publications;
  • Appropriate language and communication skills;
  • A proven record of research and publications in international human rights law or related subject fields;
  • A proven record of teaching and training in the subject field.

PLEASE NOTE: All shortlisted candidates may be required to participate in relevant skills assessments as part of the selection process.

Candidates may be expected to make a 15 minute presentation to the Appointments Committee on his / her vision for the Department.

The all-inclusive remuneration package for this contract position will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines.
