The Women's Rights Unit, the SOGIE Unit and the Disability Rights Unit at the Centre for Human Rights is organising an advocacy event in commemoration of the National Women's day in South Africa. On the 9th of August 1956 more than 20 000 women of all races marched to the Union Buildings in Protest to amendments to the Pass Law and presented a petition against the idea of women carrying passes in urban areas.

You are cordially invited to an advocacy event that is hosted by the Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria:

  • Movie screening on the topic of violence against women
    The Centre for Human Rights will be screening a movie on violence against women (VAW). The film waswas produced by the Soul City Institute of South Africa.
    The movie is a 25 minute movie depicting a woman who is continually beaten up by her husband and the neighbors turned a blind eye, however in the end through community education the whole community decides to take a stand. The idea around the event is to create awareness amongst students and staff on VAW which is common on university campuses and the need for solidarity in fighting social Justice.
