Dr. Nkatha Murungi

Dr. Nkatha holds the degrees LLB (Moi), LLM (UP), LLD (UWC).  She is an alumna (of the Class of 2009) of the Centre’s Master’s in Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa. She is also an advocate of the High Court of Kenya. She completed her doctorate at the University of the Western Cape, on the topic:  "The significance of article 24(2) of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities for the right to primary education of children with disabilities: A comparative study of South Africa and Kenya". 

She has specialist knowledge and practical experience in the domain of children’s rights and the rights of persons with disabilities. In both her academic and professional work, she has been focusing on the rights of children and of persons with disabilities.

She has vast professional experience including as Research Fellow at the Dullah Omar Institute, University of the Western Cape. Her last position was as Head of the Children and the Law Programme, with the African Child Policy Forum, Addis Ababa, where she was responsible for project leadership and implementation; staff management; budget management; fund raising; building partnerships for effective implementation of programme vision; liaison with the African Union; liaison with funding partners on specific projects; conceptualisation and leadership of programme work; identification of programme strategies; donor reporting; quality oversight; and consultant management. 

Dr Murungi has published on various aspects of human rights law, including the right to education, socio-economic rights, the rights of children with disabilities, the education sector, and on sub-regional courts. She also has some experience in teaching and postgraduate supervision.

Dr Murungi’s experience, skills and experience fit very well in the Centre, and equip her for the specific position of Assistant Director, responsible for the Centres academic programmes and activism on the rights if women, persons with disabilities and sexual reproductive rights.  Her qualities represent a rare combination of managerial skills in the field of human rights, on the one hand, and quality academic research and intellectual inquiry, on the other hand.  

She has been appointed in the Centre for Human Rights in a permanent UP-funded position, of Senior Lecturer, and as Assistant Director for a four-year term.
