On 26 July 2023, a momentous event took place at the University of Pretoria's Faculty of Law, as the Centre for Human Rights launched its groundbreaking #RacialJustice campaign. This campaign is poised to be a catalyst for transformative change, promoting equality, understanding, and social justice in a world that continues to grapple with racial disparities. With a deep commitment to fostering inclusivity, the campaign seeks to address racial discrimination head-on and pave the way for a more equitable future.

Empowering Voices, Igniting Change

The #RacialJustice campaign aims to empower individuals and communities from all walks of life to come together, recognising the importance of inclusivity in effecting real change. By providing a platform for voices that have long been marginalised, the Centre for Human Rights seeks to create a powerful collective that challenges prejudice and discrimination.

The launch event saw a diverse range of speakers, including academics, activists, and community leaders, each emphasising the urgent need to address racial injustice. Speakers included Centre Director Professor Frans Viljoen, Dr Didier Michel from University of Mauritius, Rumbidzai Dube from University of Cambridge, Kalekye Kalyo from the UN section on anti-discrimination, Zama Mthunzi from Action Aid and Sharon Ekambaram from Lawyers for Human Rights South Africa.   The speakers highlighted the impacts of systemic racism, various elements of racial discrimination and underscored the importance of unity, solidarity and action in creating lasting solutions.

Advocacy for Policy Reform

A core component of the #RacialJustice campaign is advocating for policy reform at local, national, and international levels. The Centre for Human Rights, in collaboration with various partner organisations, will actively engage with policymakers and lawmakers to promote legislation that dismantles discriminatory practices and promotes equal opportunities for all.

Educational Initiatives

Recognising the power of knowledge in transforming mindsets, the campaign is set to launch comprehensive educational and sensitisation initiatives. Workshops, seminars, and educational resources will be made available to schools, universities, and communities to foster a deeper understanding of racial justice issues and promote collaboration, empathy, a change in attitudes, prejudices and intolerance

Engaging the Digital Sphere

In today's interconnected world, the digital space plays a crucial role in shaping public discourse. Leveraging the power of social media, the #RacialJustice campaign aims to spread awareness, build solidarity, and mobilise a global network of change-makers. A dedicated team will curate impactful content, encouraging dialogue and action on racial justice issues.

Call to Action

The launch of the #RacialJustice campaign marks a pivotal moment in the fight for a more equitable and inclusive society. The Centre for Human Rights invites individuals from all walks of life to actively participate in this transformative movement. By using the hashtag #RacialJustice, people can show their support, share personal experiences, and engage in constructive conversations about racial equality.

The #RacialJustice campaign launched by the Centre represents a significant step towards a more just and inclusive world. Through empowering voices, advocating for policy reform, promoting research, education and advocacy, and leveraging the digital sphere, the campaign aspires to address racial injustice at its roots. As we collectively commit to fostering understanding, empathy, and equality, let us stand united in our pursuit of racial justice, ensuring a more equitable and non-racial society that protects human dignity and a brighter future for generations to come.
