Sarah Mabeza

Participated in the 16th edition of the African Human Rights Moot Court competition in 2007 (St Louis & Dakar, Senegal)

Sarah Mabeza attended the University of KwaZulu-Natal and completed her LLB degree in 2007 and her LLM in Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa from the Centre for Human Rights at the University of Pretoria in 2008.  Since February 2009 she has been employed at the Pretoria Delegation of the International Committee of the Red Cross firstly as a Legal Assistant and, from November 2011, as the Regional Legal Advisor.  In this post, she supports 12 African governments in their implementation of International Humanitarian Law.  Sarah is passionate about International Humanitarian Law, and providing platforms for African voices and perspectives on this important body of law to be heard.

Sarah has published a number of articles on issues related to International Human Rights and Humanitarian Law, including on refugees, implementation of international law, and on nuclear disarmament.  She has participated in numerous short courses, including on Refugee Law at the University of Witwatersrand (2010), on Human Rights and Transitional Justice at the University of Leiden in the Netherlands (2014), legislative drafting at the University of Pretoria (2014) and on Diversity and Inclusion at the University of Cape Town (2021).  She is currently enrolled at the University of Johannesburg to complete her LLD. Sarah is also a member of the South African branch of the International Lawyers Association.

Sarah enjoys reading and travelling in Africa.  She is a Director of a registered Non-profit organisation called Rihanyo Initiative, which aims to address health issues of children in Southern Africa.  Sarah is married to Kundai and has a 6-year-old son, David, a 4 year-old daughter, Rebekah, and a 1-year old son James.
