 out the courseThe Advanced Human Rights Course on Sexual Minority Rights in
  Africa introduces participants to basic SOGIESC (sexual orientation, gende
 r identity and expression, and sex characteristics) concepts and a thematic
  and geographical exposition of challenges faced by LGBTI persons in Africa
 .\nThis course is designed for people who wish to obtain basic/introductory
  information, an understanding of the terminology and a general appreciatio
 n of the problems faced by LGBTI persons in realising basic human rights in
  many societies. Participants are helped to understand ways in which they c
 an make a contribution to advancing the rights of LGBTI persons, especially
  at national level. The course focuses strongly on strategies for litigatio
 n and advocacy/lobbying at national level. Participants typically include a
 cademics; police officers and magistrates (who often lack basic knowledge a
 nd are often accused of abusing LGBTI persons); NGOs which do not work on s
 exual minority rights issues, for example, or who have only recently begun 
 to do so and need capacity building. They may also include National Human R
 ights Institutions, which are neither civil society organisations nor gover
 nment departments and who can play an important role in countries where nat
 ional governments are unsympathetic to LGBTI issues.\nThe Centre for Human 
 Rights also presents a second course on Sexual Minorities in Africa and is 
 a more technical course, designed to train LGBTI activists on how to engage
  with the African Union and United Nations human rights bodies - understand
 ing the history, composition and working of these supra-national bodies, as
  well as how to bring cases/communications before these bodies. The course 
 examines case law as well as legal and political strategies used in the pas
 t. This helps participants formulate their own strategies and develop netwo
 rks. The course is interactive and includes practical exercises, in which p
 articipants receive training on the processes and procedures of AU and UN h
 uman rights bodies. They are also able to share experiences and inspire eac
 h other. Participants typically include LGBTI activists and human rights de
 fenders in general, who at least have some experience of working at the nat
 ional level. More information on this second course will be published on th
 e Centre's website in due course.\nCourse content\n\nThe programme may cont
 ain elements of the following themes:\n\n - Conceptual clarification of the
  terms ‘gay’, ‘lesbian’, ‘bisexual’, ‘transgender’ and ‘intersex’ (the orig
 in of these and other related terms and their influence);\n - Bio-medical d
 ata on homosexuality, and its interpretation;\n - HIV and the emergence of 
 ‘men-who-have-sex-with-men’ (MSM), MSM and the LGBTI movement, the risk of 
 HIV infection to lesbians, bisexuals, transgendered and intersex persons;\n
  - African tradition/culture and homosexuality (the ‘unAfrican’ debate, ant
 hropological perspectives on homosexuality in traditional Africa);\n - The 
 approach to homosexuality of the major religious traditions (Christianity, 
 Islam);\n - Public opinion on sexual minority rights: media, popular cultur
 e and literature in Africa and sexual minority rights;\n - A typology of hu
 man rights violations of sexual minorities in African states (attempts to a
 ddress them; reasons for violations);\n - Criminal law and LGBTI persons (s
 odomy laws, and the application of criminal law);\n - Sexual minority right
 s under international law (ICCPR; Toonen case; Yogyakarta Principles; are L
 GBTI persons ‘minorities’ under international law);\n - Domestic legal prov
 isions affecting LGBTI persons in African states (eg criminalisation of sam
 e-sex relations);\n - Strategies and best practices of litigation to vindic
 ate the rights of sexual minorities (the role of civil society organs, medi
 a etc);\n - Current case law development in African states (Uganda, Kenya a
 nd Malawi);\n - EU / Council of Europe and LGBTI Rights;\n - Other internat
 ional (UN) law and sexual minoritiesFees\n\nThe course fee is ZAR 3 000.00 
 (US $ 450).\nThis fee covers tuition, course materials, teas and lunch for 
 the duration of the course.\nThe fee excludes transport and accommodation c
 osts.\nScholarships\n\nA limited number of partial scholarships are availab
 le.\nApplicants must indicate on the online application form whether they w
 ish to apply for a scholarship and provide sufficient motivation substantia
