The Centre for Human Rights, Faculty of Law, University of Pretoria, has officially welcomed the fourth cohort of students to its Disability Rights in Africa (DRIA) master’s programme, marking another milestone in advancing disability rights scholarship on the continent.
The new cohort was introduced to the programme during a virtual orientation, commonly known as “Week Zero,” held from 10–12 February 2026. The three-day orientation provided students with a comprehensive introduction to the curriculum, teaching faculty, and key institutional support services, including library services, accessibility and inclusion support, and administrative procedures essential for academic success.
Beyond the academic orientation, Week Zero provided a valuable platform for peer engagement, enabling students to connect with alumni from previous cohorts and gain insights and practical guidance for navigating the programme.
The DRIA master’s programme is one of five specialised master’s programmes offered by the Centre. Delivered over two years in a hybrid format, the programme combines online learning with in-person block sessions hosted at the University of Pretoria. The curriculum adopts a human rights-based approach to disability, focusing on the promotion and protection of the rights of persons with disabilities across Africa, as articulated in regional and international human rights instruments.
The 2026 intake comprises ten students from across the continent, including South Africa, Zambia, Malawi, Kenya, and Ethiopia. The cohort is expected to complete the programme in December 2027 and contribute to strengthening disability rights advocacy, policy, and scholarship in their respective countries.
