understanding ogbv in southern africa

This multi-stakeholder research project maps the prevalence and impact of online gender-based violence (OGBV) in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region. The EIDR Unit worked jointly with the Gender Links, Collaboration on ICT Policy for East and Southern Africa (CIPESA), Policy, and the Internet Society Namibia Chapter. It was coordinated by NamTshuwe Digital. The research highlighted policy and governance provisions scoped evidence from societal engagements, and industrial undertakings on OGBV in eight (8) SADC countries, namely, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Namibia, Malawi, Botswana, Angola, and Mozambique.

The report is published in partnership with the Centre for Human Rights. It was launched in Malawi, Johannesburg, Lusaka and Windhoek. The launch events were aimed at creating platforms for policymakers, the academic community, civil society leaders and the technical community to highlight some of the emerging issues on OGBV in the region.
