The year 2019 was quite momentous for us in the Centre for Human Rights, both in the Centre’s capacity as an academic institution and as an NGO.

As an academic department of the Faculty of Law, we celebrated 20 years of the Master’s programme in Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa (HRDA). We had a number of events with alumni and we were so fortunate to reflect on the great achievements of many of them and the significant roles they have been playing on the African continent. We also marked the introduction of another Master’s programme, one in Disability Rights in Africa last year and we saw a number of students graduating in our Master’s programme in International Trade and Investment Law in Africa (TILA).

As an NGO, we celebrated a number of events and those include the usual Moot Court competitions. The African Human Rights Moot Court Competition took place in Botswana in Gaborone and the Nelson Mandela World Human Rights Moot Court Competitions took place as usual, in Geneva. We saw the inaugural Nelson Mandela Lecture, which was presented by Justice Albie Sachs. There certainly were many other highlights and significant moments, including the Centre hosting its partners from the Global Campus of Human Rights, which also saw the first elections of the Global Campus Council here in Pretoria in December.

We realise that the Centre would not have been able to do what it did without the support, the encouragement and the linkages with our partners, our many friends, certainly all the staff members, the loyal dedicated staff members of the Centre, our graduates and also our current students. So, to all of you, thank you so much for your consistent support, the roles you played together with us. We look forward certainly to continuing working with you to advance human rights and to work towards righting wrongs in Africa.

Wishing you a very prosperous 2020!
