Against the background of the 30-year anniversary since the adoption of the Charter, the Centre instituted a multi-country study on the implementation of the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (the Charter) in ten African Countries, in 2020. The study documented the extent to which the ten countries have domesticated and implemented the Charter.
The ten countries were chosen based on geographic representation and the status of reporting on implementation. The countries included in the study are Algeria ???????? , Burkina Faso ???????? , Burundi ????????, Cameroon ????????, Ethiopia ???????? , Ghana ????????, Namibia ???????? , Mozambique ????????, Sudan ????????, and Tanzania ????????
Specifically, the study had the following objectives:
- To establish the status of implementation of the ACRWC in selected African countries;
- To identify common patterns in the domestication, interpretation, and implementation of the ACRWC in selected countries; and
- To inform efforts to enhance the implementation of the ACRWC since its adoption
The Centre has since received ten draft country reports and developed a comparative report of the Study.
Purpose of the assignment
The Centre seeks to appoint a technical editor to review the ten country reports, and the comparative study. The editor will provide technical review and oversight, to ensure that the study reports are technically sound, presented consistently, compliant with Pretoria University Law Press style guidelines available here, and adhere to standard academic writing conventions.
Deliverables and timeframes
The main deliverables of the task are:
- Final edited copies of country reports (30 pages per report)
- Final edited copy of the comparative study report (approximately 60 pages)
The successful candidate should expect to start on the assignment immediately upon signing the contract and to complete the task within a calendar month.
Eligibility
To qualify for the task, the Centre requires:
- A post-graduate degree in law
- Demonstrable knowledge of children’s rights
- Familiarity with the African human rights system, and
- Proven editorial experience of academic papers/research/study for publication in a legal academic Journal.
