On 15 September 2021, the Project on Public Finance and Human Rights hosted an online discussion entitled, “The Financial Services Human Rights Benchmark Project and its Potential Applicability to South Africa’s Financial Sector”.

The Financial Services Human Rights Benchmark measures the compliance of the financial sector with their commitments to ESG and human rights standards. It applies a set of bespoke human rights categories to the principal operational domains of financial entities and according to their main levels of institutional management. It focuses on the 22 largest financial services entities on the ASX. The utility of the Benchmark therefore lies in showing not just where financial institutions are failing but also where the opportunities lie for them to improve or even excel.
