The Centre for Human Rights (the Centre) is looking for experienced local researchers to conduct a review of discriminatory laws related to violence against women (VAW) in the following countries: Uganda, Ethiopia, Mauritius, Tanzania, Madagascar, South Africa, Angola, Malawi, Mozambique, Botswana, Republic of Cameroon, Democratic Republic of Congo, Gabonese Republic, Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, The Gambia, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal, Mali and Cape Verde.

The Centre and the Office of the Presidency of South Africa are conducting a study assessing the impact of laws in addressing VAW on the African continent (the Study). The Study is a continental wide project focussed on mapping out and analysing the specific laws related to VAW that selected African states have put in place to meet their obligations to protect from, prevent and respond to VAW. The Study will also consider the contextual issues experienced by women in the jurisdictions of the different African countries and the extent to which context impacts on the implementation of the laws available. Specifically, through a decoloniality lens, the study will consider how categories such as gender, class, race, ethnicity, (dis)ability and geographic location intersect to impact on the practice of and response to VAW. The country research reports will be collated to develop an Africa regional report.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The country researchers will: conduct desk research; participate in the elaboration of data collection tools in line with the existing research protocol; conduct qualitative field research in the applicable country, including a number of semi-structured interviews with state and non-governmental actors to be identified; analyse collected data and produce a country report in line with a template to be provided to them.
The country researchers appointed for each country will be supported in their work by staff within the Centre for Human Rights and a Technical Reference Team of experts on gender-based violence constituted for the Study.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- An advanced degree (e.g. masters) in a related field
- Three years of professional experience with non-profit human rights focused organisations, research projects, advocacy campaigns or government offices
- Experience with desktop and qualitative research
- Experience in interviewing
- Familiarity with international and regional human rights systems and treaties and frameworks relevant to women’s rights `
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):
- Must be physically based in the country for which the consultant is applying to conduct research
- Strong ability to read write and speak English
- Strong ability to read write and speak in National language of the applicable country
- Experience in the field of gender-based violence and enthusiasm for women’s rights advocacy
- Excellent research and inter-personal skills
- Highly motivated with ability to meet deadlines
- Confidence and the ability to be proactive and work independently
