The African Union (AU) declared 2025 as the “Year of Reparations” under the theme “Advancing Justice through Reparations: Reparations, Restoration, and Renaissance”. Reparations for historical injustices and human rights violations due to slavery, colonialism, and other forms of exploitation against people of African descent is one the burning issues of our time.
To explore this topic further, particularly against the background of the strategies devised and measures taken by countries in the Caribbean, individually and collectively as part of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), a conference titled Justice through Reparations: African-Caribbean Dialogue is organised. Over the two conference days, around 40 papers will be presented, as set out in the preliminary programme.
The organisers are three academic institutions (the University of The Bahamas, the University of Pretoria (Centre for Human Rights and NRF Chair in International Constitutional Law) and the University of Goma), together with the Bahamas National Reparations Committee, and the African Judges and Jurists Forum, in partnership with CARICOM and the United Nations Permanent Forum on People of African Descent. The event is further undertaken in collaboration with the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights, the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights and the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child.
The format of the event is: a two-day, hybrid, conference, bringing together experts and interested stakeholders from across Africa and the Caribbean, together with local South African participants, including the University of Pretoria and other students. There will be simultaneous English-French interpretation.
Dates: 2 - 3 June 2025.

A selection of papers presented at the Conference will be contained in the 2025 African Human Rights Yearbook. The African Human Rights Yearbook is a collaboration between the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights, the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights and the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child. The African Human Rights Yearbook publishes studies on the promotion and protection of human rights, and provides a forum for constructive engagement about the African human rights system with academics and other human rights commentators on the continent. L’Union africaine (UA) a proclamé l’année 2025 comme « Année des réparations », sous le thème : « Faire avancer la justice à travers les réparations : Réparations, restauration et renaissance ». La question des réparations pour les injustices historiques et les violations des droits humains résultant de l’esclavage, du colonialisme et d’autres formes d’exploitation des personnes d’ascendance africaine constitue aujourd’hui l’un des enjeux majeurs de notre époque.
Dans le but d’approfondir la réflexion sur ce sujet, notamment à la lumière des stratégies adoptées et des initiatives engagées par les États des Caraïbes – individuellement ou collectivement dans le cadre de la Communauté des Caraïbes (CARICOM) – une conférence intitulée « Justice à travers les réparations : Dialogue Afrique-Caraïbes » se tiendra les 2 et 3 juin 2025. Au cours de ces deux journées, une quarantaine de communications seront présentées, conformément au programme provisoire.
Cet événement est organisé conjointement par trois institutions universitaires : l’Université des Bahamas, l’Université de Pretoria (Centre des droits de l’homme et Chaire NRF en droit constitutionnel international) et l’Université de Goma, ainsi que par le Comité national des réparations des Bahamas et le Forum des juges et juristes africains. Il bénéficie du partenariat de la CARICOM et du Forum permanent des Nations Unies pour les personnes d’ascendance africaine. La conférence est également organisée en collaboration avec la Cour africaine des droits de l’homme et des peuples, la Commission africaine des droits de l’homme et des peuples, ainsi que le Comité africain d’experts sur les droits et le bien-être de l’enfant.
La conférence prendra la forme d’un événement hybride de deux jours, réunissant des experts et parties prenantes originaires d’Afrique, des Caraïbes et d’Afrique du Sud, notamment des étudiants de l’Université de Pretoria et d’autres établissements d’enseignement supérieur. Une interprétation simultanée en français et en anglais sera assurée.
La conférence se déroulera sur le Campus Future Africa de l’Université de Pretoria, en Afrique du Sud. La participation est gratuite. Des rafraîchissements et déjeuners seront offerts aux participants présents physiquement.
