The Centre for Human Rights, in partnership with the Centre for Child Law both at the Faculty of LawUniversity of Pretoria, and Dullah Omar Institute for Constitutional Law, Governance and Human RightsUniversity of the Western Cape as well as the Université de Namur hosted the annual Advanced Human Rights Course on Children’s Rights in Africa from 23 to 27 June 2025.  The course was also supported by the Global Campus of Human Rights

The central objective of the course is to strengthen the capacity of professionals whose work directly or indirectly affects the lives of children across the African continent. The course capacitates participants with knowledge and practical skills to contribute meaningfully to the advancement of children’s rights in Africa.

This year’s course attracted over 50 diverse professionals, including employees of international and regional organisations, government officials, employees of civil society organisations, personnel from national human rights institutions, lawyers, academics, and graduate students. It was held in a hybrid format, with both in-person and online participation.

The course covered a wide range of themes, such as the historical foundation of children’s rights, the normative framework, access to justice, intersectionality and vulnerability, contemporary issues in children’s rights, advocacy strategies, and the implementation and enforcement of children’s rights. Scholars and practitioners in the field of children’s rights shared their expertise throughout the course.
