On Monday 28 January 2019, Mark Deng, a doctoral candidate at the University of Queensland in Australia, made a presentation on 'Constitution building in conflict-ridden South Sudan: A prerequisite for achieving peace and long-term political stability'

He set out a number of problems with the transitional constitution, 2011, resulting from the government control of the constitutional drafting. He suggested a road map towards a permanent constitution based on the constitutional drafting process in Kenya with an elected Constitutional Assembly, a National Constitutional Conference and a constitutional referendum.
