The African Coalition for Corporate Accountability (ACCA) is looking for a dedicated, creative, and energetic person who will continue the work of the Coalition’s Communication and Development Co-ordinator.

The successful candidate will be appointed on a temporary full-time basis, initially for a one-year contract. The contract may be renewed depending on available funding, and the incumbent’s satisfactory performance. This is an existing but vacant position in the Centre.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Project Co-ordinator will be responsible for the planning, co-ordination, and management of the ACCA, together with the Project Manager. The incumbent will work together with ACCA’s Project Manager and oversee ACCA membership, raise financial support, and build the Coalition by recruiting new member groups and deepening the engagement of existing networks and partners, both inside and outside of the African region.

The incumbent will update the ACCA website, manage ACCA’s social media platforms, and help develop an effective communications strategy. He/she will also co-ordinate annual meetings, periodic membership calls, external communications, and all communications with the ACCA Steering Committee (SC), which is comprised of seven ACCA member organisations. The Steering Committee will provide the Co-ordinator with management and decision-making support. The incumbent will report to the ACCA Steering Committee. The following will also be expected of the incumbent:

  • Coalition-building:
    • Contribute to shaping and defining ACCA’s strategic vision and overall direction;
    • Assist in co-ordinating ACCA members’ grassroots-based field campaigns, using the existing resources of member groups as well as developing new resources;
    • Serving as a primary spokesperson for the coalition as a whole, whether in the media, via governmental contacts, at conferences, or in other venues;
    • Engage member groups in ACCA’s work, as well as recruit new partners into the Coalition;
  • Communication:
    • Keep the partners in contact with each other;
    • Develop and contribute to the ACCA quarterly newsletter in collaboration with the partners;
    • Draft publications and external communications in support of ACCA’s focus areas;
    • Manage and update the ACCA listserve, website and social media platforms;
    • Represent the ACCA in meetings and in public platforms, along agreed-upon position; 
  • Administration:
    • Oversee the Coalition’s management, including hiring, training, and supervising any future staff and consultants;
    • Organise and facilitate logistics and organising related to regular ACCA-hosted (such as the annual General Assembly and six monthly Steering Committee meetings);
    • Engage in conference calls within the ACCA Steering Committee and ACCA membership, as well as other key partners and networks;
    • Maintain comprehensive, accurate and up-to-date files, records and systems;
    • Co-ordinating the teaching of the Masters Degrees; 
  • Financial planning and fundraising administration:
    • Set and manage the organisational budget in consultation with the Steering Committee and Director;
    • Manage financial accounts in collaboration with UP’s Finance Section;
    • Assist in all fundraising activities, including the writing and submission of funding proposals;
    • Provide periodic reports and continuous liaison with donors.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • A bachelor’s degree in a related field;
  • Three years of professional experience with non-profit organisations (ideally in the field of business and human rights), advocacy campaigns, government offices, or relevant positions in the private sector;
  • A successful track record of raising funds for not-for-profit organizations from major donors, foundations, and members;
  • Experience working in a multicultural setting preferred, particularly in context where English and French languages were used;
  • A driver’s licence.

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

  • Knowledge of additional regional languages, such as Swahili, Portuguese, or Arabic;
  • Enthusiasm for the organisation’s mission and campaigns;
  • Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills;
  • Highly motivated;
  • Ability to juggle multiple tasks and consistently meet deadlines;
  • Confidence and the ability to be proactive, think quickly, and work independently;

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

  • An advanced degree (e.g. honours or masters) in a related field;
  • Three years’ experience working in coalition-based organisations;
  • Familiarity with international and regional human rights systems and treaties, and international legal frameworks relevant to corporate accountability, including the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights;
  • Pre-existing relationships within the NGO community, as well as with foundations, media and relevant policymakers.

PLEASE NOTE: This position involves regional and international work-related travel.

The all-inclusive remuneration package for this contract position will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines.
