The Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria, is seeking a Post-doctoral Fellow in Children's Rights in Africa, and will be hosted within the Children’s Rights Unit of the Centre. The deadline for applications is 23 August 2019.

Terms of Reference

(i) Background 

The Centre for Human Rights, Faculty of Law, University of Pretoria (UP), is an internationally recognised university-based institution combining academic excellence and effective activism to advance human rights, particularly in Africa. It aims to contribute to advancing human rights through education, research and advocacy.

As an academic department of the Faculty of Law at UP, the Centre is also one of a network of universities and institutions seeking to advance human rights and democracy education across the world under the umbrella of the Global Campus of Human Rights. As the Africa Campus of the Global network, the Centre presents a Master’s programme on Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa.

The Global Campus has prioritised growing the child rights research agenda in all of its regions in the academic year 2019/2020. In line with this goal, the Centre seeks to recruit a post-doctoral researcher in children’s rights to coordinate the Africa region’s contribution to the research agenda of the Global Campus.

(ii) Modalities of the fellowship

The post-doctoral fellow will be hosted within the Children’s Rights Unit of the Centre. The Unit undertakes research and advocacy on various aspects of children’s rights in Africa, and works closely with the African human rights system, especially the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child, to enhance accountability for the protection of the rights of children on the continent.

The Unit also collaborates with a number of other child rights institutions from across the continent on various initiatives, including hosting the advanced short course ‘Children’s Rights in Africa’ which is offered in collaboration with the Centre for Child Law at UP and the Children’s Rights Project of the Dullah Omar Institute at the University of the Western Cape.

The prospective post-doctoral fellow will work closely with the team at the Centre’s Children’s Rights Unit, under the supervision of the Centre’s Assistant Director. 

(iii) Required qualifications

Prospective candidates should fulfil the following criteria:

  • Hold an LLD or PhD degree obtained within the last 5 years
  • Hold a post-graduate certification / specialisation in children’s rights
  • Have at least 3 years’ experience in project management
  • Have a demonstrable research record in children’s rights
  • Have demonstrable knowledge of the African Union and its institutions
  • Have verifiable experience in engagement with the African Union human rights system

(iv) Desirable qualification

Candidates with the following qualifications/skills will have an added advantage:

  • Working knowledge of French
  • Established research profile in children’s rights
  • Experience working in African countries
  • Lecturing experience
  • Having a permit or other status that allows them to work in South Africa

(v) Terms of the fellowship

The fellowship is for an initial period of 6 months, renewable subject to performance and availability of funds.

The fellowship provides a reasonable compensation package in accordance with UP’s terms for temporary post-graduate posts. 

The fellowship shall commence on 1 September 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter.
