Call for Papers: The regulation of family relations in Africa

Legal pluralism remains a hallmark of most legal systems in Africa, especially because of its colonial past. Accordingly, most African countries recognise more than one form of marriage, some regulated by customary law and some by statute law. Such legal diversity in marriage arrangements is yet to be showcased in a single volume for the benefit of academics, students and legal practitioners.

Incidentally, it has been observed that a number of Law Faculties in Africa offer a course in Comparative Family Law, aimed at putting the spotlight on the striking similarities and differences in the regulation of family relations in Africa. Unfortunately, though, the literature on this important area of law remains comparatively limited. Accordingly, the editors of the intended publication, are requesting from interested authors, papers which essentially:

  • describe the types of marriages recognised by/in a specific country, focusing on the essentials of such marriages;
  • explain the regulatory framework for such marriages;
  • critically assess the gaps in the laws regulating marriages; and

Call for Papers: Sexual Gender-Based Violence and Harmful Practices and Sexual Reproductive Health Rights Symposia Series 

The Child Rights Research Centre of Africa University, supported by UNICEF, Zimbabwe and the SpotlightInitiative, invites abstract submissions and attendance registration for the Sexual Gender-Based Violence and harmful Practices and Sexual Reproductive Health Rights Symposia Series. The SGBV/HP and SRHRs SymposiaSeries will be held on a weekly basis from 7 May to 11 June 2021. 

The symposia will follow a webinar format and provide a platform for serious interrogation of how to address SGBV/HP and ensure the provision of SRHRs. Accepted symposia submissions will be reformulated into publishable material.
The SGBV/HP and SRHRs Symposia Series will conclude with a multi-sectoral roundtable webinar for key stakeholders to engage in the latest interventions in addressing SGBV/HP and the provision of SRHRs.

Call for Papers: ‘Good governance, participatory democracy, and social justice: civil society as an agent of change and innovation in Africa’ conference

In Africa, civil society has played and continues to play, a critical role in providing space for both change and mass innovation throughout the continent. In recognition of this, the Faculty of Humanities at the University Johannesburg (UJ) will be hosting the ‘Good governance, participatory democracy, and social justice: Civil society as an agent of change and innovation in Africa’ conference. The conference is due to take place at the Capital Hotel, Melrose, in Johannesburg, South Africa, from 31 August - 1 September 2021 and will be hybrid in nature.

This conference will bring together, both face-to-face and virtually, representatives and scholars of civil society from across Africa to review and assess the constructive roles that civil society has played and continues to play on the continent in addressing a range of political and socio-economic challenges.

Abstracts can be submitted via email to Mr Sven Botha at ujcivilsocietyconference@gmail.com by no later than the 1st of April 2021. Authors of accepted abstracts will be notified by the 15th of June 2021, with their full paper to be delivered by the 16th of December 2021.

Call for Papers:  Social Partnerships and Regional Integration 

The RISC-RISE Consortium calls for papers for its 2021 conference on 29 - 30 November 2021. The aim of the event is to examine how transnational social partnerships are established in order to address problems or promote sustainability across national borders within a region or between different regions. For example, "Luxembourg’s Greater Region" assembles various associations and public institutions to address questions related to mobility, cross-border labour markets, environmental issues, etc. This call for papers engages transnational partnerships led by citizens, civil society, unions, businesses, or public institutions aimed at cooperative problem solving (i.e. management of shared natural resources, climate change mitigation, crime, etc.), promotion of sustainability or improvement of quality of democracy. 

Conference format:
Health restrictions permitting, the conference will be held in hybrid form with both in-person and remote presentations. The conference will include panels organised by the RISC-RISE consortium’s working groups (4 speakers per panel) and keynote speakers. 

Paper proposals:
The deadline for the submission of paper proposals is planned for 20 May 2021. All proposals, including 1) Proposed paper title, 2) Author name(s) and contact information, 3) Author affiliation(s) and position(s), 3) A 100-200 word abstract and 4) The name of the panel for which the paper is being proposed should be submitted by email to: riscrise2021@gmail.com.
