On 30 June 2023, in Menlyn, Pretoria, esteemed jurists and legal experts gathered to enhance their knowledge and awareness of LGBTIQ+ issues in South Africa. The event was part of an ongoing Equality Courts project, sponsored by the European Union, empowering communities, and presiding officers in the fight for equality and justice.

The roundtable discussions created a space for open dialogues, sharing experiences and perspectives on LGBTIQ+ rights and needs, fostering a deeper understanding of the issues and their legal implications in South Africa.

Guided by Judge Shane Kgoele, the participants actively engaged in workshops that covered various aspects of LGBTIQ+ rights and social contexts. With expert facilitation from Judge Kgoele, Ms Jade Madingwane, and Ms Kgomotso Mufamadi, they explored topics such as human rights standards, prejudice, bias, and best practices for fair and impartial judgments.

The Presiding Officers of the LGBTIQ+ Roundtable and Workshop emphasised the importance of respecting fundamental rights and highlighted the judiciary's role in promoting inclusivity and equality. Each judicial officer plays a significant role in creating a safe and inclusive courtroom environment.

Special thanks to all participants, facilitators, and the European Union for their support and contributions. This event marks a crucial step toward sustainable judicial education and a more equitable judiciary.
