UN Working Group on the Issue of Discrimination against Women in Law and in Practice

2018 womens rights unit with UN alumna

Meskerem Techane, a member of the UN Working Group on the Issue of Discrimination against Women in Law and in Practice, visited the Women's Rights Unit on 17 May 2018 to discuss possible avenues of collaboration.

The Working Group was established by the Human Rights Council at its 15th session in September 2010. Its focus is to identify, promote and exchange views, in consultation with States and other actors, on good practices related to the elimination of laws that discriminate against women.

The discussion with Ms Techane focused on how the Working Group can work closely with the Women's Rights Unit on their mandate and creating synergies with the African human rights mechanism, specifically, the Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Women in Africa.

Ms Techane is also an alumna of the LLM in Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa (Class of 2011).
