Background

The Centre is implementing a research project on the Impact of race and colour on the enjoyment of human rights and fundamental freedoms by persons with albinism in South Africa. The project seeks to determine the extent and the manner in which racism and colourism hinder the enjoyment of human rights and fundamental freedoms by persons with albinism in South Africa. The project also seeks to explore ways of addressing race and colour-based discrimination against persons with albinism in South Africa. Accordingly, the Centre is recruiting an experienced consultant with extensive knowledge on the rights of persons with albinism in South Africa. The consultant is expected to develop a toolkit on the use of equality courts by persons with albinism in South Africa to combat race and colour-based discrimination. 

Scope of work
The consultant is expected to complete the following activities:

  1. Draft a comprehensive and accessible toolkit on the use of equality courts in South Africa
  2. Facilitate workshop to strengthen the capacity of organisations of persons with albinism in South Africa on how to bring a case before the equality courts in South Africa

Deliverables

  1. An annotated outline showing the main sections of the toolkit
  2. A draft toolkit on the use of equality courts in South Africa to combat race and colour-based discrimination against persons with albinism
  3. A final toolkit on the use of equality courts in South Africa to combat race and colour-based discrimination against persons with albinism

Eligibility criteria
Minimum requirements

  • A master’s degree in Law or International Human Rights Law
  • In-depth knowledge of the South African legal system, particularly the Equality Courts
  • In-depth knowledge of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities 
  • A strong understanding of the situation of persons with albinism
  • Excellent research skills 
  • Excellent report writing skills 
  • Excellent command of the English language 
  • Must be based in South Africa

Desirable competencies

  • A proven record of research and/or publications on the rights of persons with albinism, disability rights or human rights 
  • Applicants with albinism are strongly encouraged to apply.

Term of consultancy
The term of the consultancy is 60 days.
