FACES African Student Cellphone Film Competition

Students from all countries in Africa are invited to participate in the FACES 2022: African student Cellphone Film Competition. The Competition, which was launched in 2017, rewarded the first winner with an all-expenses paid trip to Mauritius and in 2018, 2019 and 2020 extended a cash prize to the top three entries. The purpose of the Competition is to encourage students from Africa to express themselves and to engage with issues of relevance to Africa, using available cellphone technology.

Theme 

This year we have introduced the following theme for the competition: #GreenJusticeAfrica - The impact of climate change on the protection and fulfilment of human rights in Africa
All entries must interpret the theme and keep to the allocated time limit of a maximum of 3 minutes.

 Prizes

This year, the top three winners will be receiving cash prizes as follows:

  • R10 000: First prize to winning film
  • R5 000: Best storyline highlighting human rights challenges
  • R5 000: Best cinematography prize

Closing date

The closing date for FACES 2022 is 1 July 2022.

Submit your entry online

The purpose of the competition is to encourage students from Africa to express themselves and to engage with issues of relevance to Africa, using available cellphone technology. Registered undergraduate and postgraduate students from all tertiary institutions in Africa are invited to participate in the FACES 2022: African Student Cellphone Film Competition.

FILM IT.

Make a short fictional film or animation by using your smartphone. The maximum length is 3 minutes.

TWEAK IT.

Films can be edited and must explore the theme of this year: Technology and its impact on human rights.

SUBMIT IT.

Films should be uploaded to YouTube/Vimeo and submitted via the online form before 1 July 2022.
