First Prize: Herd Boy 

Thabo, a boy who was denied an opportunity to go to school by his uncle, who was wanted him to take care of his herd, however his kids were not treated the same way. His right to education was violated by his legal guardian, he also threatened that he will kick him out of the house if he dares go to and never look after the cows.

Second Prize: Trafficked 

Every single day, in hundreds of countries around the world, human trafficking is taking place, it is estimated that globally around 21 million people fell victim in 2018. 

Trafficked depicts the reality that women and child experience in today's society. The film focuses on the personal story of a young woman who falls victim of human trafficking, in it brings out the fear of being unsafe and always having to look behind because you could be next.

Third Prize: The story of the African Child

The film highlights the basic rights of the African child the threat that illegal adoption poses to the enjoyment of the children's rights.

Students from all countries in Africa are invited to participate in the FACES 2022: African student Cellphone Film Competition. The Competition, which was launched in 2017, rewarded the first winner with an all-expenses paid trip to Mauritius and in 2018, 2019 and 2020 extended a cash prize to the top three entries. The purpose of the Competition is to encourage students from Africa to express themselves and to engage with issues of relevance to Africa, using available cellphone technology.

The purpose of the Competition is to encourage students from Africa to express themselves and to engage with issues of relevance to Africa, using available cellphone technology.

Prizes

This year, the top three winners will be receiving cash prizes as follows:

  • R10 000: First prize to winning film
  • R5 000: Best storyline highlighting human rights challenges
  • R5 000: Best cinematography prize

Closing date

The closing date for FACES 2022 is 1 July 2022.


Official Rules

FACES 2022 Official Rules (English)

  1. Those who make the film must be registered as undergraduate or postgraduate students at a university or college in Africa during 2022. Group work, especially on an inter-disciplinary basis, is encouraged.
  2. Each film must be a maximum of 3 minutes long, and filmed on a smart phone, ideally one supporting HD. It may be edited on a computer or other device, using any software available to you. Please pay particular attention to sound during and after filming to ensure that all dialogue and sound effects are audible.
  3. The words FACES 2022: African Student Cellphone Film Competition must appear at the start of the film. Crew and crew information (including university or college affiliation) must appear in the end credits.
  4. The film must explore the theme for this year:  #GreenJusticeAfrica - The impact of climate change on the protection and fulfilment of human rights in Africa 
  5. The film must be original and be made specifically for the Competition. You may not submit your film to any other competition or festival.
  6. The final cut of the film must be uploaded on YouTube or Vimeo. Please use this form to submit your entry.
  7. The closing date for submissions is 1 July 2022. No submissions will be accepted after this date.
  8. The film may be in any language. The use of indigenous African languages is encouraged. Where dialogue is not in English, English subtitles must be provided.
  9. Participants who use music must use copyright free music or create their own if they cannot obtain copyright permission for the music of others.
  10. The winners will be selected by an independent panel of experts. The panel of experts will evaluate each film according to its own creative and technical merits. Overall, the winning film will demonstrate not simply technical competence and creative flair, but also show an innovative approach to human rights and social justice issues on the African continent.
  11. Only the director of the winning film is eligible for the prize. It can however be transferred to one other member of the production team.
  12. By submitting an entry, participants indemnify the organisers from any claims related to the material used, for example any music used in the film. Participants also agree to the organisers posting the film or parts of it online and screening it in public.
  13. Winners must ensure they are prepared to send information regarding passport/identity document; bank account details and be willing to have their names and photographs publicised for the collection of the prizes.
