This video invites you to take a journey down memory lane, as we look back at the 30 years of the African Human Rights Moot Court Competition.

The African Human Rights Moot Court Competition was established in 1992 by the Centre for Human Rights, Faculty of Law, University of Pretoria, and started with a southern African focus. In 1995 it expanded its focus to the rest of the continent and was affectionately called the All-African Moot Court Competition.

In this presentation, we look at the early years of the African Human Rights Moot Court Competition, how it began and how it developed over the years to become one of the most consistent moot court competitions on the African continent, and the world. This annual event brings together all law faculties in Africa, whose top students argue a hypothetical human rights case as if they were before the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

The year 2021 marks 30 years of the competition’s existence. Join us as we look back at the previous years and the impact that the African Moot has had on the lives of human rights law students across the continent.

As a commemoration of the memory of the competition’s founding father, Professor Christof Heyns, the African Moot has officially been renamed as

The Christof Heyns African Human Rights Moot Court Competition.
