The Centre for Human Rights, Faculty of Law, University of Pretoria, cordially invites you to a webinar series organised by the Democracy and Civic Engagement Unit on “Unconstitutional changes of governments in Africa: Emerging issues and lessons from the continent”. The webinar series pulls together experts from across the continent to interrogate current trends and challenges on democracy in Africa with a specific focus on Sudan, Eswatini and Cameroon.

Broadly, the webinar series aims to understand and unpack the current trends and challenges leading to the decline in democratic standards and ethos on the continent. The webinars will also address the factors underpinning these trends, and to seek out perspectives on how to change the prevailing trends and build knowledge on the importance of a human rights-based approaches to governance standards in Africa.

The webinar aims to address the following key themes: 

  • Unconstitutional changes of government, current trends and challenges.
  • Human rights in the contexts of unconstitutional change of governments.
  • Protection of the rights of the marginalised under the current adverse democratic conditions
