The Centre for Human Rights is deeply saddened by the sudden passing of one of our alumni from the Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa (HRDA) Master’s programme, Professor Aifheli Enos Tshivhase. According to the latest updates, the cause of his untimely death was attributed to a collapse at his home on Wednesday 7 June. Unfortunately, we did not receive any more detailed information.

Enos Tshivhase completed the HRDA programme in 2000. He worked at the University of Cape Town, and served as the Head of the Department of Public Law at the Nelson Mandela University.  His last position was at the University of Kwazulu-Natal as an Associate Professor. He published extensively in the field of military judges and courts and was a well-known legal scholar. He served for a period as military defence counsel in the South African National Defence Force.

‘We remember Enos very fondly as a Class of HRDA Pioneers member. We followed his subsequent career with interest and admiration. Enos has left a very significant footprint within the South African legal academy’, Professor Frans Viljoen.

May his soul rest in peace and we also wish courage to his wife and two daughters whom he leaves behind.
