The Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria, in partnership with the Norwegian Centre for Human Rights, University of Oslo, successfully hosted a Business and Human Rights training course from 2 to 7 June 2025. The six-day programme brought together 56 participants from 14 African countries, including academics, legal practitioners, government officials, civil society actors and business professionals.
The training focused on strengthening understanding of the relationship between business activities and human rights, with particular attention to the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights. Topics covered included extractive industries, climate change, gender, forced labour, illicit financial flows, technology and access to remedies for victims of corporate human rights abuses. A key highlight of the course was a site visit to the Sibanye-Stillwater Mine, which provided participants with practical insight into human rights challenges in the extractive sector.
The Centre for Human Rights is grateful to all partners, presenters and participants who contributed to the success of the training and remains committed to building academic and practical capacity on business and human rights across Africa.
