The Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria, is proud to join Professor Danwood Chirwa (left) and Professor Bonolo Dinokopila (right), two of our LLM/MPhil Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa (HRDA) alumni, in celebration of their latest career achievements.
Professor Danwood Chirwa
Prof Danwood Chirwa (Class of 2001, from Malawi) was confirmed as the Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Cape Town, effective from 1 January 2019. He completed his doctorial studies at the University of the Western Cape and has worked with the University of Cape Town since 2009. As a world class scholar, Prof Chirwa is a NRF B3-rated researcher and has the status of an internationally recognised scholar. His research focus has been on frameworks and normative institutional mechanisms to protect the poor and vulnerable.
Professor Bonolo Dinokopila
Prof Bonolo Dinokopila (Class of 2008, from Botswana), the Head of the Law Department at the University of Botswana, has recently been confirmed as an Associate Professor in the same institution. This is an extraordinary feat. Prof Dinokopila is an accomplished scholar with several publications under his belt. His research focuses on socio-economic rights, criminal law and public law.
“I am more than elated by this achievement. I think it is largely because I managed to obtain same at 35 becoming the youngest Associate Professor in the Department of Law, Faculty of Social Sciences and possibly in the whole of the University of Botswana. It makes me happy because I love teaching and I love human rights work. Everything goes back to 2008 when I was admitted to the LLM/HRDA programme. That programme changed my life and I am forever encouraged by the work of my fellow alumni and Professors at the Centre to keep doing what I am doing here in Botswana. I am really blessed to have made it to Associate Professorship at my age.” - Prof Dinokopila
We are happy for these great strides from our alumni and we want to wish them a fruitful career in the coming years.
