The Centre for Human Rights recently featured on an episode of SABC2’s television programme known as 'Activated'. Activated is a disability actuality television series that focuses on raising awareness about disability-related issues, with each episode focusing on a specific topic.
The Disability Rights Unit at the Centre for Human Rights was invited to participate in episode 11 titled ‘Shaping the economic and social transformation agenda through disability-inclusive research.’ In episode 11, which aired on Saturday 3 July 2021, Ms Dianah Msipa spoke about the just-concluded global research on the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and the related emergency measures on persons with disabilities.
The research was conducted as part of a joint initiative between the Centre for Human Rights and six international disability rights organisations, namely, Validity Foundation, European Network on Independent Living, International Disability Alliance, Disability Rights International, International Disability and Development Consortium, Disability Rights Fund and Disability Rights Advocacy Fund. Known as the Covid-19 Disability Rights Monitor, this initiative conducted rapid independent monitoring of the impact of the Covid-19 emergency measures on persons with disabilities around the globe. The research utilised surveys to collect information on the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The global survey received 2 152 responses from 134 countries around the globe. The findings of this research are outlined in a report titled, ‘Disability rights during the pandemic: A global report on findings of the COVID-19 Disability Rights Monitor.
