The SA Federation for Mental Health (SAFMH) hosted the I Decide=I Am travelling art exhibition from the 17th to the 27th of July 2017 at its Randburg offices in Gauteng. The globally acclaimed exhibition by Bulgarian illustrator Nadezhda Georgieva and human rights activist Yana Buhrer tells the personal stories and reflections of sixteen people denied of their legal capacity because of their psychosocial or intellectual disability. The exhibition also includes three pieces by South African artist Daniel Mosako, based on his interpretation of the Life Esidimeni tragedy in which almost 100 persons with mental disabilities lost their lives.

The SAFMH, a national mental health organisation that focuses on mental well being invited residents and staff of residential facilities and Mental Health Organisations from across Gauteng to view the exhibition. More than 5 different groups of mental health care users from organisations such as Talisman Foundation, Little Eden, and Logwood Village came to view the exhibition.

The mental health care users all gave very positive feedback on the exhibition, and expressed the need for more members of the public to view the art pieces and to be educated about legal capacity for persons with mental disabilities.
The travelling exhibition is an initiative by the Centre for Human Rights to bring awareness and understanding of the right of all persons with disabilities to enjoy legal capacity on an equal basis with others, the effect of legal capacity deprivation on the enjoyment of other rights and implementation of the concept of supported decision making . The exhibition will be at the Pan African Parliament until the end of August and will travel to Cliff Dekker Hofmeyr in November. The Centre for Human Rights encourages organisations who would like to be part of the travelling exhibition to get in touch with them.
