Who can apply?
Students from various academic backgrounds, including law, social sciences, humanities, and related fields, are eligible to apply.
Do I need a law degree?
No. The programme is specifically designed to accommodate students from multiple disciplines.
Is the programme offered online?
Currently, the programme is offered in-person at the University of Pretoria. Occasional hybrid or online sessions may be available.
What is the language of instruction?
English.
Are scholarships available?
Yes, a limited number of scholarships for both South African and international students are available within the law faculty. Please consult the up website Funding | University of Pretoria and up law website Faculty of Law | University of Pretoria for funding opportunities and eligibility. Please note that the both the scholarships and awarding of scholarship process are facilitated by the UP-law faculty and not the Centre for Human Rights.
Can international students apply?
Yes. The programme is open to applicants from across the globe, particularly from Africa.
What are the career opportunities?
Graduates work in human rights NGOs, international organizations, government agencies, academia, and policy research institutions.
Do I need to secure a supervisor before I apply?
No, you do need to have a supervisor prior the application process. A student will find a supervisor during the program. It is the student ‘s responsibility to search for a supervisor for their mini dissertation. A student may search for a supervisor within the law faculty and is not limited to the Centre for Human Rights.
How long is the program?
The course is run over two years. However, students are welcome to do the course in one year meaning you must be registered for all modules in that year including the mini dissertation.
