The Centre for Human Rights, Faculty of Law, University of Pretoria, wishes to congratulate Prof Charles Maimela on his appointment as the Deputy Dean: Teaching and Learning of the Faculty of Law for the period 1 August 2020 to 30 April 2024. He joins the Dean, Professor Elsabe Schoeman, at the helm of the faculty ship as it faces the stormy waters of a COVID-19 world.

Professor Maimela, who is both the youngest and first-ever black Deputy Dean of the Faculty, completed the degrees LLB, LLM and LLD at UNISA. His doctorate, titled ‘Legal issues relating to the treatment of persons living with cancer’, reveals one of his abiding interests, namely, medical law. Charles Maimela joined the Department of Private Law at UP in 2016. Prior to joining UP, he held teaching positions at UNISA and the University of KwaZulu-Natal. He is currently the BA (Law) coordinator in the Faculty. He is also the editor-in-chief of the law journal De Jure. Since taking on this position, Professor Maimela introduced a number of innovations and improvements to ensure the greater efficiency and impact of this faculty flagship.

The Centre looks forward to working with Prof Maimela, and with his support to continue its work on combining academic excellence and effective activism to advance human rights, particularly in Africa.
