About the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR)

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) is a concise statement of 30 unique interdependent, indivisible and interrelated human rights applying to everyone, everywhere. Adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on 10 December 1948, the world in 2018 commemorates 70 years of the UDHR’s existence.

The UDHR promises to all the economic, social, political, cultural and civic rights that underpin a life free from want and fear. They are not country-specific, or particular to a certain era or social group. They are the inalienable entitlements of all people, at all times, and in all places — people of every colour, from every race and ethnic group; whether or not they are disabled; citizens or migrants; no matter their sex, their class, their caste, their creed, their age or sexual orientation.

In the 70 years of the its existence, the 30 human rights in the UDHR have become part of binding international, regional, sub-regional and national laws. These rights have also inspired the emergence of more elaborate human rights documents, enforceable treaties, treaty bodies, independent states, abolishment of harmful practices, progressive judicial and quasi-judicial pronouncements, and human rights campaigns across the globe.

According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein, “the power of the UDHR is the power of ideas to change the world. It inspires us to continue working to ensure that all people can gain freedom, equality and dignity. One vital aspect of this task is to empower people to demand what should be guaranteed: their human rights.”

About the UDHRat70 Multimedia Competition

In this illustrious year, celebrating the 70th anniversary the UDHR, Centre for Human Rights is launching the UDHRat70 Multimedia Competition.

University of Pretoria staff and students are invited to think creatively and submit a visual, audio-visual, oral or written representation that captures one of the UDHR rights.

The aim of the Competition is to contextualise the UDHR into a post-war, post-colonial and post-apartheid world and to demonstrate its relevance to our quest for peace, equality and dignity on a global scale, seventy years after its adoption.

Each member of the UP community is invited to make one submission dealing with any one of the 30 rights enshrined in the UDHR. The Centre encourages the UP community to submit works that deal with issues that are personal to them and to look critically at the rights that have had a direct impact on their lives. UP members are encouraged to tell the story of who they are and where they are in the context of the rights enshrined in the UDHR.
