HRDA Bahati Msosa

Ms Bahati Msosa | Blantyre, Malawi

Bachelor of Laws (Honors) University of Malawi

Previous experience

I am a Senior Legal and Prosecutions Officer at the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) of Malawi, where I prosecute corruption cases and recover assets through Non-Conviction Based Asset Forfeiture. I handle both litigation and investigative support, representing the ACB in civil proceedings and prosecuting corruption and related offences before Malawian courts, including the Supreme Court.

Before joining the ACB, I practised law at Masumbu & Company Legal Practitioners, JB Suzi & Company Legal Practitioners, and United General Insurance Company Limited, gaining extensive experience in civil and criminal litigation, insurance law, and corporate advisory services. My background in private practice strengthened my expertise in legal strategy, courtroom advocacy, and dispute resolution.

Beyond litigation, I am a human rights activist and Research and Grants Coordinator for the Women Lawyers Association (WLA), where I provide pro bono legal aid and advocate for gender justice and anti-child marriage initiatives. I am also a YALI RLC SA alumna, which refined my leadership in governance, legal reform, and policy advocacy. My work in anti-corruption, human rights, and gender justice is driven by a commitment to advancing accountability, economic justice, and access to legal services in Malawi.

Academic fields of interest:

Criminal Law, Anti-Corruption and good governance, Civil Asset Recovery, Women's and Children's Rights

Position prior to the programme

Senior Legal & Prosecutions Officer, Anti-Corruption Bureau

HRDA Mamoud Bah

Mr Mamoud Bah | Freetown, Sierra Leone

Bachelor of Laws- Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone, Sierra Leone; Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Political Science- Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone, Sierra Leone

Previous experience

Development, a non-governmental organisation in Sierra Leone working to end violence against women and girls, in 2020, a position that I still occupy. In 2023, I was called to the Sierra Leone Bar as a barrister and solicitor of the superior courts of judicature in Sierra Leone, and I did my pupillage at Tejan-Cole, Yillah and Partners, one of the reputable law firms in Sierra Leone. While doing my pupillage, I also interned as a legal researcher and rapporteur at the Residual Special Court for Sierra Leone under the supervision of the Principal Defender of the Residual Special Court for Sierra Leone and the vice chairman of the Trust Fund for Victims at the International Criminal Court. I presently run an online platform called Dissent, which is a hub for promoting free speech and advocating for social justice and democracy in Sierra Leone.

I hold certificates in several short courses, namely: Pomoting and Protecting Human Rights: a Global Overview, from the Global Campus of Human Rights; Key Essentials: the Global Biodiversity Framework Sustainable Development and the Law from the University of Cambridge; Advocacy from the Inns of Court College of Advocacy; International Refugee Law from the International Institute of Humanitarian Law; Children's Rights and Technology in the Digital Age from the Global Campus of Human Rights; Business and Human Rights from the Global Campus of Human Rights; International Criminal Law from Case Western University; Advanced Human Rights Course on Forcibly Displaced Persons; and Social Protection for Sustainable Development from the United Nations System Staff College.

Academic fields of interest:

With the recent happenings in the world: racism, police brutality, rape, and femicide, a number of Centre for Human Rights HRDA alumni came together with others to provide a message of hope and solidarity. In this video, Ms Mary Izobo (HRDA 2015), Ms Hibo Mahad (HRDA 2015), Ms Aminata Ly (HRDA 2015) and Ms Khuraisha Patel (HRDA 2015), alongside Ms Greta Dunn, Ms Neda Grozeva, Ms Khanyo Farise and Ms Rita Jacques provide this message: "We may look different and speak different languages, but we are one race - the human race. Hoping that our voices will be heard and we can contribute towards the wave of change."

Recently, three graduates of the Master’s in Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa (HRDA) programme, presented by the Centre for Human Rights, Faculty of Law, University of Pretoria, were appointed to positions in which they are able to apply the theory of democratisation and human rights to make a difference in two African states, Namibia and Uganda.

Journey to becoming the Chairperson of the African Commission

In conversation with Dr Solomon Dersso

A number of alumni of the Master’s programme in Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa (HRDA) participated in the 17th All Africa Course on International Humanitarian Law (IHL). The course was presented at the Faculty of Law, University of Pretoria, from 28 January to 6 February 2020.

Alumni Diaries: 2000-2024

cover alumni diaries 2024

Download the Alumni Diaries: 2000 - 2024

Although it was officially formulated during the Alumni Conference which took place at the University of Pretoria on 10 December 2009, on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the programme, the idea of creating an LLM HRDA Alumni Association has gained ground in a number of events and testimonies over the years.

Since the pioneers completed the programme in December 2000, class or country networks have been established and exist informally.

This publication commemorates 25 years of the Master’s programme in Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa (HRDA). It gives a snapshot of the HRDA programme; the Centre for Human Rights where it is based, and the partner universities in collaboration with which it is presented.

Above all, this publication recognises the work of the alumni whose achievements in the field are contributing to advancing human rights and democracy, primarily in Africa, but also in other parts of the world. They are the manifestation of a momentum to move Africa forward; the vindication of the idea that expertise and a common understanding are important tools in addressing today’s development challenges.

In 2006, the UNESCO Award provided an impetus for initiatives that keep this particular LLM positioned as an academic standard developed by the Centre. In a 2008 survey, the overwhelming majority of alumni recognised the LLM HRDA as having impacted significantly both their professional and personal lives.

These records have obvious grounds in the very spirit of the course. The mere evocation of references like South Street, Robben Island, Friday debates, and clinical groups resonate as togetherness pullers, urging alumni to recreate and keep the LLM unique HRDA spirit. Besides, the formation of a gradually extending alumni network has become visible throughout the human rights milieu in Africa and beyond. It has become necessary to capitalise on such notoriety to create a human rights advocacy force. Achieving this obviously goes hand in hand with working to ensure the sustainability of a common label, the LLM HRDA programme. Only an Alumni Association could provide both the ownership and necessary HRDA driver to meet such a goal.

In 2009, the need to create an Alumni Association had manifestly come to its maturity. An opportunity was offered by the Centre to give substance to the initiative during the Alumni Conference organised on the fringes of the celebrations of the 10th anniversary of the LLM, in December 2009.

The main outcomes of the Conference included the appointment of a ‘lose’ Alumni Association structure and a committee mandated to draft a constitution. Thematic workshops were also held during the celebrations which agreed on the need of creating listserv and thematic groups.

In 2010, an interim coordinator was appointed to ensure information, communication and completion of the constitution drafting process. The first alumni coordinator was appointed in 2011 with a mandate to finalise the establishment of the Association, ensure a day-to-day running, design and implement further activities to ensure the strengthening of the network.

It has been a pleasure leading our association and I thank you for your cooperation. I thank you for the support I have received from you and I thank you for the experiences we have shared together.

I am grateful to have known you, to have sent you emails and to have received your responses. I am indeed proud that our association has grown and now we are a network of over 400 alumni from 36 African countries, Spain and the United States of America.

In this farewell, I will like to remind you of the goal ahead of us. The goal to see an Africa that respects human rights and embraces democracy.

When I think of Africa, I think of a continent that needs to breathe more with the lungs of wise people and think more with the heads of good women and men.

The Moot in Nairobi was a week-long event to remember. It was my first time in Kenya, a country much famed as one of the powerhouses of East Africa.

I do not recall at which point I fell in love with Kenya but I must say that I fell hard. Not only did it remind me of Lagos with the traffic and the organized chaos but it also gave me a reason, lots of reasons, in fact, to smile.

The University of Nairobi along with our Alma Mater hosted a brilliant moot court competition. And the icing on the cake to this wonderful experience was meeting the Kenyan alumni.

In April this year, global outrage rang heavily when over 200 girls were abducted in Chibok, Nigeria by the extremist Boko Haram sect. Placards with internet-tags saying ‘Bring Back Our Girls’ from the streets of Abuja to the Red Carpet in Hollywood saturated the internet. The movement was feisty. The campaign was unwavering enough to touch a nerve with political figures.

In no time… Governments sprang to action! The beauty of international cooperation flustered! Accountability was suddenly not an illusion! Political will sailed on the mast of reality! Human rights became a movement! But in the beginning, it was not so. Boko Haram had killed scores of individuals, bombed various places including the United Nations building and international outrage was not of the same magnitude as when Chibok girls were abducted.

What happened differently? Thoughts may vary. Answers may differ. But one thing is clear: some people demanded that the girls must be brought back!

Sometime last year, there was a story of a ‘standing man’ in Turkey; a man whose lone protest not only inspired many but also kindled worldwide curiosity and became a symbol of defiance to repressive rule. When the police detained a number of others who joined in for literally doing nothing, this act served to show some of the excesses in the use of state power.

One significant lesson which the story of the standing man teaches is that doing something in protest against an unpleasant situation, no matter how insignificant it may appear, can make an impact. Staring at the image of the founding father of Turkey did not unseat the government in Istanbul but it was enough to draw the eyes of the world, through the media, to a situation that required attention.

Sometimes it is that little thing that counts; that lone stand against oppression, that little advocacy on righting human wrongs, that little decision to bring about the change we desire to see in the world. The little which seems insignificant may be just about sufficient to withstand one of those wrongs on our continent.

However, the big question is: are we ready to do that little?

There is an emerging intrigue to the African Human Rights Moot Court Competition that we all need to begin to watch out for and hopefully in the near future we would premiere a documentary about the active participation of alumni in the annual moot court competitions.

Significantly, at this year’s moot, four of our alumni led teams to Cape Town. Alumnus Jean-Desire Ingang-Wa-Ingange led the team from Université Libre de Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo; Alumna Lungowe Matakala Chishinga led the team from the University of Zambia; Alumnus Johannes Buabeng-Baidoo led the team from the University of the Gambia; while Alumnus Roopanand Mahadew led the team from the University of Mauritius. Université Libre de Kinshasa donned various glamorous hats at the moot! The team had the third best French oralist; the third best French memorial and was the second-best French team in the Moot Competition, making it to the final round. The three English teams also did well. Not only were they among the top five English speaking teams of the competition, they also had students in the top fifteen best English oralists. The University of Mauritius was among the top ten English memorials. We cannot but commend our alumni in the training of these teams.

For 12 years, the Master's programme has strictly been an LLM and as such only law graduates were eligible to apply. However, this year, there is a new development. The Master's programme is now LLM/MPhil Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa. Why “MPhil,” you might ask? The answer to this question must necessarily begin with an understanding of what the realisation of human rights entails. While on the programme, I personally observed that when we talk about human rights and democratisation, we talk of disciplines beyond our legal comfort space. We talk about politics when we begin to access the benchmarks for democracy. We speak in scientific languages when we demand states to provide essential medicines. We segue into the figures of economics when we assess the argument of budgetary
implications for the realisation of socio-economic rights. We rely on journalism to provide details on the information we cannot personally gather.

There should be no concern that we are increasingly been referred to as the “Pretoria Mafia” by other human rights and democracy actors in Africa and beyond. Yes, we should be proud to be mentioned as who we are: A human rights mafia. Our headquarters are at the Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria, South Africa and we have now established country chapters in more than 15 African countries. More chapters are expected to operate in the rest of the 25 other countries in Africa, the Americas and Europe where our alumni are originally from or are based.

For those of us who are in the academia, I would like to share my relative disappointment about the still fair level of knowledge of the African human rights system among young law graduates in our universities.

As I marked some memorials and attended oral pleadings of some teams during the 21st African human rights moot court competition that just took place in Maputo, Mozambique, I noticed a lack of knowledge of the African human rights system, of its law and jurisprudence.
