Claudio Grossman

Member, United Nations International Law Commission

Biography:

Claudio Grossman joined Washington College Law School in 1983 as director of the International Legal Studies Program and was appointed dean of American University Washington College of Law and the Raymond Geraldson Scholar for International and Humanitarian Law in 1995. He stepped down as dean in 2015, and returned to the faculty as a professor of law. In 2014, Grossman was re-elected to an unprecedented fourth term as chair of the United Nations Committee against Torture. Currently president of the Inter-American Institute of Human Rights, Grossman previously served as a member of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights and as the commission’s first special rapporteur on the rights of women, as well as its special rapporteur on the rights of indigenous populations.
