Giorgio Malinverni

Retired judge of the European Court of Human Rights

Biography:

Giogrio Malinverni is an honorary Professor at the Faculty of Law of the University of Geneva and a Judge at the European Court of Human Rights. Malinverni was born in October 1941 in Locarno. He holds a Law degree from the University of Fribourg and was awarded his PhD in 1965 from the Graduate Institute of International Studies in Geneva.

Malinverni held the position as assistant from 1966 to 1971 and then assistant professor from 1974 to 1980 at the Faculty of Law of the University of Geneva before becoming a full professor in 1980. He has been a guest professor at the Universities of Lausanne (1982 and 1989), Neuchâtel (1991), Nice (1994), Paris II (1995) and Strasbourg (since 2000). He was the Director of the Department of Constitutional Law (1983-1989 and 1995-1998) and Chairman of the Public Law Section (1989-1993).

Malinverni has been a legal adviser to the International Committee of the Red Cross (1971-1973), Swiss member of the European Commission for Democracy through Law (Council of Europe), member of the Committee on Social and Cultural Rights Economic, Advisor international to the Constitutional Court of Croatia (1997-1999), member of the Advisory Committee established by the framework Convention for the protection of National Minorities (Council of Europe) (2002).

In addition to his academic and advisory roles Malinverni has been a member of the Editorial Board of the Swiss Review of International Law and European Law (Zurich), member of the Scientific Committee of the Quarterly Review of Human Rights (Brussels), member of the Scientific Council of the “Rivista internazionale dei dell diritti ‘ uomo” (Milan).
