Shyreen Odala Chirwa

Shyreen holds a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) degree, obtained from the University of Malawi, Chancellor College. She is employed as a Principal Resident Magistrate in the Malawi Judiciary and administratively works as the Acting Registrar of the Industrial Relations Court. Shyreen is also the Liaison and Communications Officer for Women Judges Association of Malawi (WOJAM) a body corporate of all female judicial officers in Malawi. She also serves as a board member for White Ribbon Alliance for Safe Motherhood in Malawi (WRASM), a non-governmental organization promoting reproductive, maternal and newborn health rights. In pursuance of the Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa (HRDA) programme, Shyreen looks forward to gaining useful insights on the multinational approaches in furtherance of human rights and access to justice in Africa and beyond, with special interest on the prosecution of human rights violations. She aspires to be a High Court Judge and believes that the HRDA will contribute immensely towards her work as an adjudicator and build a professional foundation in carrying out research, legal and policy formulation and interpretation, and implementation of public work. She is highly certain that the HRDA will equip her with a more structured and focused approach and will make her work more impactful and contribute towards substantive transformational change in the protection of human rights, through the decisions that will come from her court.
